Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced on the 1st that it will hold the Jinyeong Dan-gam Festival with some program changes reflecting the national mourning atmosphere for the Itaewon tragedy.
The opening and closing ceremonies, all stage performances, and fireworks have been canceled, and the festival will focus mainly on exhibitions, experiences, and sales events such as the display of verified Dan-gam seed trees from 1994 to 1996, the Dan-gam variety exhibition hall, the Jinyeong Dan-gam seed tree history hall, and the Dan-gam processing experience center.
According to the city, the Jinyeong Dan-gam Festival began in October 1985 under the name Jinyeong Dan-gam Festival to enhance the city's pride as the seed tree site of Dan-gam and to promote consumption by publicizing the excellence of Jinyeong Dan-gam, a representative agricultural product.
A city official said, "The local residents' desire and expectations for the festival, which is being held normally for the first time in four years due to African swine fever and the impact of COVID-19, must have been great. We intended to hold it grandly and splendidly to respond to those feelings and to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Jinyeong-eup's elevation, but we decided to proceed quietly and calmly to join the national mourning atmosphere."
