Hankyung University and Korea Welfare University to Merge into 'Hankyung National University' in March Next Year
Headquarters in Anseong... Capacity 1,271
Aiming to be a key university in the Gyeonggi Southern region
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Hankyung University and Korea Welfare University will merge and start anew as 'Hankyung National University' from March next year.
On the 1st, the Ministry of Education announced that following the passage of the amendment to the 'National School Establishment Decree' at the Cabinet meeting, the scope of the administrative organization installation of the two universities will be adjusted, and the affiliation of students and faculty will be gradually changed.
Hankyung University and Korea Welfare University have been discussing integration since 2007, and to respond to changes in the internal and external environment such as the decline in the school-age population and the 4th Industrial Revolution, they formed a Joint Committee for University Integration in 2019. After gathering opinions within the universities, holding meetings and public hearings, they submitted the integration application in January last year.
The Ministry of Education approved the integration of the two universities based on nine reviews by the National University Consolidation Review Committee regarding the validity of the integration and post-integration specialization plans, and proceeded with the amendment of the National School Establishment Decree.
Hankyung National University aims to become a regional hub university in the southern Gyeonggi area encompassing Anseong and Pyeongtaek. The Anseong campus will specialize in information and communication technology (IT), semiconductors, agricultural energy, wellness industries, and future convergence industries, while the Pyeongtaek campus plans to specialize in providing quality integrated higher education opportunities to socially disadvantaged groups such as persons with disabilities.
The headquarters will be established in Anseong and will be integrated into a system with one president, two vice presidents, three offices, one bureau, one division, seven departments, and two administrative offices. A Department of Support for Disabled Students will be established on the Korea Welfare University campus (Pyeongtaek).
After integration, there will be 18 undergraduate colleges and 4 graduate schools. The admission quota is 1,271 students, combining 1,087 from Hankyung University and 184 from Korea Welfare University. Among Korea Welfare University's 2018 admission quota, 40.2% (51 students) of the non-disabled quota was reduced.
