In particular, this event features special lectures by invited guests including a scholarship officer from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, actor Jung Eun-pyo, EBS’s lead English instructor Heo Jun-seok, and Choi Seung-pil, author of ‘Study Brain Reading Method.’
At the first lecture held on the 27th, Son Tae-jin, a scholarship officer in charge of the high school credit system at the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, gave a detailed explanation of the direction and countermeasures for the full implementation of the high school credit system starting in 2025, drawing explosive responses from about 130 attendees.
On November 2, the second lecture will feature actor Jung Eun-pyo, father of gifted siblings and known for his respectful and communicative parenting style, who will share parenting know-how to nurture children’s infinite potential under the theme ‘Please Nurture Your Children’s Giftedness.’
The third lecture on November 8 will be led by Heo Jun-seok, EBS’s lead English instructor, who will have an honest discussion on English study incorporating self-directed learning methods under the theme ‘The Big Picture of English Education and Self-Study Learning Methods.’
The final special lecture on November 15 will be given by Choi Seung-pil, author of ‘Study Brain Reading Method’ and a reading education expert with extensive experience in essay guidance. He will share reading techniques that develop ‘language ability’ to acquire knowledge, rather than forced reading, under the theme ‘Study Brain Reading Method: No Fun, No Effect.’
Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “I hope this Parent Academy will be an opportunity to acquire a healthy educational perspective and parenting secrets. We will continue to actively support strengthening parents’ capabilities as an educational community by providing customized special lectures needed by parents.”
Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) held the 2022 Gwanak-gu Child Rights Monitoring Group Performance Sharing Meeting ‘Everyone’s Roundtable’ on the 28th at the district office auditorium to guarantee children’s rights and propose policies.
The ‘Child Rights Monitoring Group Performance Sharing Meeting’ was organized to share the footprints and results of activities so far, where children have sought their rights and created policies themselves, to encourage each other and explore future directions.
The event was held simultaneously online and offline (live broadcast on the YouTube channel ‘Live Gwanak’), featuring reports on the activities of the Gwanak-gu Child Rights Monitoring Group, policy proposals, a discussion among stakeholders to promote child rights, and recreational activities.
Notably, this year’s performance sharing meeting included various policy proposals for creating a safe smart walking environment where children and parents, who are vulnerable to traffic, can feel secure.
Using IoT (Internet of Things) technology, proposals included a ▲smart traffic light that visually alerts when a vehicle is turning right toward a school route and detects pedestrians, an ▲AI-based blind spot smart notifier that broadcasts warning messages for safety during school commute times, and a ▲Yes Kids Zone map on the ‘Smart Gwanak’ website that informs children of easily accessible places?these are smart policies aimed at improving child rights.
Park Jun-hee, district mayor, who participated in the event, said, “The district was certified as a child-friendly city in 2020 and is promoting child-friendly policies and projects based on the four fundamental rights of children as stipulated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We will carefully consider your activities, policy proposals, and the projects suggested today and actively reflect them in the four-year child-friendly city plan.”
The ‘Child Rights Monitoring Group’ is a participatory organization that listens directly to children’s voices and reflects their opinions in policies. As guardians of rights who consider community issues from children’s perspectives, they promote children’s participation rights and engage in district administration.
In May, the district launched the ‘2022 Gwanak-gu Child Rights Monitoring Group’ in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Good Neighbors. Composed of 51 members (10 mentors and 41 children) ranging from elementary to high school students, the group divided into teams to brainstorm ideas, conduct field surveys and photovoice projects, produce UCC promotional and activity videos, and propose policies, engaging in various child rights activities.
The district is implementing various projects such as operating an ombudsman for child rights relief, assigning dedicated officials for child abuse, and producing a child-friendly budget book. Currently, it is conducting research for a child status survey and establishing a four-year (2023?2026) strategy for creating a child-friendly city.
