Hosted by Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, and Segye Ilbo, the event was attended by Vice Mayor Lee Jang-sik, Gyeongbuk Province Deputy Governor for Economy Lee Dal-hee, National Assembly members Kim Jeong-jae and Kim Byeong-wook, and Segye Ilbo President Jeong Hee-taek, among others. Participants attracted attention as they operated drone controllers to fish, creating a unique spectacle.
This competition took place against the backdrop of Pohang’s pristine coastline, a marine tourism city, with over 200 participants from about 60 drone fishing teams nationwide competing fiercely.
The Janggil-ri Complex Fishing Park in Guryongpo-eup, where the competition was held, was completed between 2009 and 2015 with a project budget of 12 billion KRW. Along the open coastal deck walkway, various convenience facilities such as pensions floating on the sea, floating fishing spots, and cafes have been established, making it popular among family visitors.
The ‘Boriddol Bridge,’ where this fishing competition venue was set up, is elongated toward the sea, offering a unique pleasure of enjoying the beautiful seaside up close.
Vice Mayor Lee Jang-sik said, “I am very pleased and honored to hold the national drone fishing competition in Pohang, a marine leisure tourism city,” adding, “We will do our best to link the next-generation battery industry with the drone industry to create new growth engines for Pohang’s future, contributing to revitalizing the local economy and creating jobs.”
The ‘drone’ was initially developed as an unmanned aerial vehicle for military use, but recently it has expanded beyond simple tasks such as pesticide spraying and aerial photography to various fields including smart agriculture and fisheries, precise national land management, remote communication observation, and smart cities.
