The First 'Double-Decker Electric Low-Floor Bus' in the Central Region Runs in Daejeon and Sejong
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The first 'double-decker electric low-floor bus' in the central region will operate between Daejeon and Sejong starting next month.
The city announced on the 25th that it will introduce double-decker electric low-floor buses on the BRT B1 line.
These buses will run 20 times daily from the 14th of next month on the route between Daejeon Station, Sejong Station, and Osong Station.
The double-decker electric low-floor bus has a total of 71 seats, with 12 seats on the first floor and 59 seats on the second floor, which is more than the 41 seats on a regular bus. This is expected to partially resolve the issue of overcrowding during rush hours, which made it difficult to use buses on this route.
In particular, the newly introduced buses are expected to contribute to improving the convenience of public transportation for people with disabilities.
Since the BRT B1 line runs on a road exclusively for automobiles, safety devices such as lane departure warning, emergency braking, seat belts, and emergency escape devices are mandatory.
Because of this, regular low-floor buses could not operate on this route, which had restricted wheelchair passengers from using the BRT B1 line.
For the same reason, disability organizations have continuously demanded the introduction of low-floor buses on the BRT B1 line, and the city decided in April to introduce two double-decker electric low-floor buses that can accommodate two wheelchairs to solve this problem.
In addition, in preparation for the introduction of the double-decker electric low-floor buses, related regulations have been revised, facilities obstructing the operation of double-decker buses on the route have been removed, and electric charging facilities have been installed at the starting point (Daejeon Station) and the garage (Geumgo-dong).
The newly introduced double-decker electric low-floor buses have no stairs at the entrance and provide a separate space to secure wheelchairs, ensuring mobility rights for transportation-vulnerable groups and people with disabilities (wheelchair users), according to the city.

Lee Jang-woo, mayor of Daejeon, said, "There have been repeated demands from disability organizations for the introduction of low-floor buses on the BRT B1 line," and added, "The city reflects these demands by introducing double-decker electric low-floor buses, which is expected to provide convenience to people with disabilities who use wheelchairs and commuters."
