On the 24th, President Yoon Seok-yeol appointed Lee Gi-il, the 2nd Vice Minister, as the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Park Min-su, the Health and Welfare Secretary of the Presidential Office, as the 2nd Vice Minister.
With this, the positions of Minister and Vice Ministers of the Ministry of Health and Welfare were all filled 160 days after former Minister Kwon Deok-cheol handed over the Ministry on May 17. Previously, the Ministry of Health and Welfare faced difficulties in personnel appointments due to the successive withdrawal of ministerial candidates after President Yoon's inauguration. Former candidate Jeong Ho-young was dropped due to allegations of his child's fraudulent medical school admission, and former candidate Kim Seung-hee resigned amid allegations of violating the Political Funds Act.
This personnel appointment at the Ministry of Health and Welfare was made as an 'internal promotion.' Minister Cho served concurrently as the 1st Vice Minister and Acting Minister since May and was appointed Minister this month. Lee, who had been serving as the 2nd Vice Minister overseeing the health sector, was appointed as the 1st Vice Minister, filling the vacancy. The 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health and Welfare oversees social welfare policies such as those for the elderly and disabled.
Park, the newly appointed 2nd Vice Minister responsible for health and medical affairs, is regarded as a person well acquainted with President Yoon's health and welfare policies. After leaving the Ministry of Health and Welfare in July to serve as the Health and Welfare Secretary of the Presidential Office, he is returning after about three months.
