Next-Generation 5G Consumer Report Released
Promotion of AR and Metaverse Service Adoption
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Global telecommunications equipment company Ericsson LG released a forecast report on the 20th predicting that the growth of the global 5G market will accelerate the adoption of augmented reality (AR) and extended virtual worlds (Metaverse).
On the same day, Ericsson LG published a report titled "What Do Next-Generation 5G Consumers Want?" revealing six major trends related to 5G. The report was based on interviews and surveys conducted with consumers from 37 countries.
Ericsson LG predicted in the report that "at least 30% of smartphone users intend to subscribe to 5G within the next year," and forecasted that "by 2023, at least 510 million consumers across 37 markets will adopt 5G."
Next-generation 5G consumers are expected to focus on network coverage and 5G availability. In this process, 5G is anticipated to increase the use of enhanced video including AR and contribute to the widespread adoption of the Metaverse.
For example, 5G users reportedly spend one more hour per week on Metaverse-related activities such as gaming, socializing, and shopping compared to LTE users. They are also expected to consume two more hours of video content weekly on mobile devices, with five of those hours projected to be consumed using AR and virtual reality (VR) glasses by 2025.
