Yongin City Processes 238 Tons of Flood Waste Around Nakseong Reservoir
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has completely removed 238 tons of flood-damaged waste that had been abandoned around Nakseong Reservoir (98-2 Gogi-dong, Suji-gu).
This waste was collected and gathered by the Korea Rural Community Corporation in September after the water level of Dongmak Stream rapidly rose due to the heavy rain (534mm) in August, causing flooding at Gogi Bridge and nearby houses and shops, resulting in various trash and brushwood.
Yongin City invested 29.21 million KRW to remove all 200 tons of brushwood and 38 tons of waste.
The city determined that the main cause of the Dongmak Stream flooding was the upstream sediment that obstructed the water flow of Nakseong Reservoir, and as an emergency measure for citizen safety during the heavy rain, dredged a 600m section connecting the upper and lower reaches of Dongmak Stream and Nakseong Reservoir.
Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin previously participated in flood recovery efforts and on the 4th sent a letter to the Korea Rural Community Corporation requesting cooperation, stating that "dredging the sediment deposits in Nakseong Reservoir is the fundamental solution to prevent repeated flooding in the Gogi-dong area."

The mayor said, "Since the flood-damaged waste was left to rot causing foul odors and secondary damage, the city has thoroughly collected it," and added, "We will do our best to minimize residents' damage by preparing flood prevention measures for Dongmak Stream, including dredging Nakseong Reservoir, and seeking cooperation from related organizations."
