[2022 National Audit] "Excessive 'Takeshima' and 'Sea of Japan' Labels, Insufficient Correction Efforts"
3,028 Cases of East Sea and Dokdo Notation Errors in the Past 5 Years
Correction Rate Only 20.2% "Monitoring Scope Should Also Be Expanded"
Over the past five years, foreign media and organizations have referred to 'Dokdo' as 'Takeshima' and 'East Sea' as 'Sea of Japan' in 3,028 cases. However, the correction rate was only 20.2% (618 cases).
According to the 'East Sea and Dokdo Notation Errors and Correction Results' released on the 19th by Lee Gae-ho (Democratic Party), a member of the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, there were 2,942 and 106 notation errors for the East Sea and Dokdo respectively over the past five years. The Overseas Promotion Culture Center operates the 'Korea Correct Information Service' to correct such errors and distortions. However, the number of corrected cases remained at 589 and 29 respectively.
In the case of East Sea notation errors, 489 cases were reported in 2018, with 145 cases (29.7%) corrected. This year, 303 cases were reported up to last month, but only 26 cases (8.6%) were corrected. The Dokdo notation errors show a similar trend. In 2018, 23 cases were reported and 8 cases (34.8%) were corrected, but this year only 2 out of 12 cases (16.6%) were fixed.
