[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Human Rights Commission announced on the 13th that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health and Welfare have accepted the recommendation to establish and implement policies for the protection and promotion of the human rights of people with mental disabilities.
The Human Rights Commission expressed its welcome for the broad acceptance of the recommendation based on the "Human Rights Report on People with Mental Disabilities" by the Office for Government Policy Coordination and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. It stated that it will continue to monitor the implementation of the recommendations and strive to protect and promote the human rights of people with mental disabilities. Previously, the Commission published the "Human Rights Report on People with Mental Disabilities," which included the current human rights situation and improvement measures, and based on this, recommended the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health and Welfare to establish and implement policies for the protection and promotion of the human rights of people with mental disabilities.

According to the Human Rights Commission, the Prime Minister responded that he plans to make efforts through discussions and coordination within the government policy council. The Minister of Health and Welfare indicated acceptance or partial acceptance of 50 out of 63 policy recommendation tasks from the Commission. The recommendations accepted by the Ministry include ▲abolition of Article 15 of the Act on Welfare of Persons with Disabilities ▲abolition of income criteria for selecting beneficiaries of the outpatient treatment support system ▲expansion of professional personnel at mental health welfare centers, the Commission added.
