‘Changwon Bukburi Paengnamu’ Designated as a Natural Monument
Changwon Special City to Hold Commemorative Event with Cultural Heritage Administration on the 12th
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam will hold a commemorative event with the Cultural Heritage Administration regarding the designation of the 'Changwon Bukburi Zelkova Tree' as a national natural monument.
View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam will hold a commemorative event on the 12th at 2 PM near the Changwon Bukburi Zelkova Tree (102-1 Bukburi, Daesan-myeon, Uichang-gu, Changwon City) together with the Cultural Heritage Administration regarding the designation of the ‘Changwon Bukburi Zelkova Tree’ as a Nationally Designated Cultural Property and Natural Monument.
The Bukburi Zelkova Tree is a protected tree estimated to be over 500 years old. It was designated as a Nationally Designated Cultural Property on the 7th, recognized not only for its academic and historical value but also for its unique scenic value harmonizing with the surrounding landscape.
The commemorative event will proceed in the order of a pre-ceremony performance by the Changwon City Symphony Orchestra, a lecture on natural heritage, issuance of the management organization designation certificate, screening of a Zelkova Tree video, commemorative speeches, and congratulatory speeches.
The opening performance will reenact the violin performance featured in the drama ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ in front of the Zelkova Tree. The city plans to award an honorary Bukburi village chief certificate to actor Jeong Gyu-su, who played the role of the village chief of Sodeok-dong. All proceedings of the event will be broadcast live on YouTube for real-time viewing.
Throughout the village, photos of whale-themed murals by Bukburi village resident artist Yoon So-jung and photos capturing the residents of Dongbu Village will be exhibited. Additionally, works by famous artists celebrating the designation of the Zelkova Tree will be displayed, providing a variety of attractions.

Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, said, “As the citizens’ interest is intense, I am very pleased that efforts to preserve Changwon’s precious cultural heritage have borne fruit in the designation as a natural monument,” and added, “We will strive to make the Bukburi Zelkova Tree a representative tourist attraction of Changwon.”
