Gyeonggi-do to Collect Marine Debris from Four Islands Including Hwaseong's Gukhwado and Ippado
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is set to collect marine debris accumulated on four islands within the province, including Gukhwado in Hwaseong.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 5th that from the 6th to the 13th of this month, it will carry out marine debris collection operations on four islands within the province: Gukhwado and Ipado in Hwaseong City, and Pungdo and Yukdo in Ansan City.
Earlier, on the 20th and 21st of last month, the province used drones and other means to assess the occurrence of marine debris caused by typhoons in the island areas. The assessment found that about 20 tons of marine debris had accumulated on these four islands.
The province plans to deploy 155 personnel, including members of fishing cooperatives, volunteer organizations, and marine debris collection project staff, to clean the entire coastal areas of the islands.
This cleanup activity will be conducted by sending collection personnel to each island for one day per island. The collected marine debris will be transported to land using the Gyeonggi Clean Sea Ship, Gyeonggi Cheongjeongho.
In particular, Ipado, where a large amount of coastal debris was confirmed, will see 100 cleanup personnel and four fishery management vessels mobilized on the 13th to collect marine debris left on coastal areas that are difficult for people to access.
