[Photo] One Head of Cabbage for 10,000 Won... Atmosphere at Garak Market
On the 23rd, as napa cabbage prices continue to soar, workers are organizing napa cabbages at Garak Market in Songpa-gu, Seoul. Merchants stated that due to rising cultivation costs such as agricultural materials, oil prices, and labor costs, as well as poor napa cabbage yields caused by heatwaves, heavy rains, and soft rot disease, the supply has significantly decreased, making price increases inevitable. According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation on the 20th, the average retail price of napa cabbage per head was 9,429 won as of the previous day, a 66% increase compared to the previous year. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is promoting the expansion of napa cabbage supply. Following the supply of 1,300 tons (t) of napa cabbage from reserves to the market last week, an additional 1,500 tons from reserves will be supplied, totaling 3,000 tons of napa cabbage to the market by early next month. Additionally, the Ministry plans to announce supply stabilization measures for major kimchi ingredients such as napa cabbage, radish, chili peppers, and garlic around the end of next month in preparation for the kimchi-making season after November.
