The Bill to Establish the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Support Committee Passes First Hurdle in the National Assembly
Passed in the National Assembly's Public Administration Committee Bill Subcommittee... Scheduled for Plenary Session on the 27th
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The bill containing the basis for the establishment of the 'Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Support Committee under the Prime Minister's Office' for the launch of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province in June next year has passed the first hurdle in the National Assembly.
Gangwon Province announced on the 20th, "The 1st Subcommittee on Bills of the National Assembly's Administrative Safety Committee merged and reviewed the amendment bills to the 'Special Act on the Establishment of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, etc. (Gangwon Special Act)' proposed respectively by Democratic Party lawmaker Heo Young and People Power Party lawmaker Noh Yong-ho, and approved them."
The amendment to the Gangwon Special Act includes provisions to establish a support committee under the Prime Minister's Office to deliberate on specific development plans for Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.
Once the support committee is established, it will coordinate inter-ministerial disagreements regarding various autonomous special cases granted to Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and play a role in reviewing development plans for the special self-governing province.
At the subcommittee meeting, members of the Administrative Safety Committee reached a consensus on establishing the support committee, but reportedly expressed concerns about the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's opinion that "grounds for integrated operation with the Sejong and Jeju support committees should be specified."
Currently, the special acts for Jeju and Sejong, which have been granted special self-governing status, include provisions for the establishment of support committees and perform various roles related to the special self-governing system.
Meanwhile, Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon Province, attended the subcommittee meeting in person to explain the necessity of the bill amendment to the lawmakers.
