Typhoon Nanmadol Soon to Become 'Super Strong'... Closest Approach to South Korea in Early Morning of the 19th

View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Typhoon No. 14 'Nanmadol,' passing east of Okinawa, Japan, is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon within 12 hours.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 17th, Nanmadol, which passed 520 km east of Okinawa at 9 a.m. that day, is forecasted to become a super typhoon by 9 p.m. when it reaches 360 km northeast of Okinawa. The super typhoon stage means the typhoon's maximum wind speed exceeds 54 m/s, capable of collapsing buildings.
Nanmadol is then expected to move northwest before turning northeast and making landfall on Kyushu.
It is anticipated to approach closest to South Korea from dawn to daytime on the 19th. At that time, the central pressure will be 945 hPa, and the radius of strong winds?defined as the area where winds exceed 15 m/s?will be around 400 km.
Specifically, Jeju will experience strong winds from dawn on the 18th; the Gyeongsang coast, eastern inland Gyeongnam, western coast of Chungnam, and Jeolla coast will have strong winds from the afternoon of the 18th; and Gangwon Yeongdong will experience strong winds from dawn on the 19th, with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of 20?25 m/s (70?90 km/h). Jeju, the Gyeongsang coast, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo may see maximum instantaneous wind speeds reaching 25?35 m/s (90?125 km/h).
As Nanmadol approaches, heavy rain will fall mainly on Jeju and the Gyeongsang coast from the afternoon of the 18th through the afternoon of the 19th. Expected rainfall amounts on the 18th and 19th are 50?100 mm in the Gyeongsang coast, Gangwon Yeongdong, and Jeju mountainous areas; 20?80 mm in eastern inland Gyeongsang and Jeju (excluding mountainous areas); and 5?40 mm in eastern Jeolla and western inland Gyeongsang. Especially in the Gyeongsang coast, where heavy rain is expected, rainfall may exceed 150 mm during the 18th and 19th.

At sea, starting with the southern sea offshore on the 17th and continuing until the 19th, waves will reach heights exceeding 10 meters in the southern and eastern seas. Strong winds with maximum instantaneous speeds of 25?35 m/s will also blow over the southern and eastern seas. Jeju faces the risk of storm surges, while the southern and eastern coasts are at risk of waves overtopping breakwaters. On the eastern coast, swells may continue until the 20th.
