Seoul Metropolitan Council to Discuss 'Abolition of TBS Support' Ordinance... Agenda to be Submitted on the 20th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Council is set to discuss a bill to abolish support for TBS (Traffic Broadcasting System).
According to the council on the 12th, the 314th extraordinary session, which opens on the 14th of this month, will address the "Ordinance to Abolish the Establishment and Operation of the Seoul Media Foundation TBS."
The Standing Committee on Culture, Sports, and Tourism, which is responsible, will submit the agenda on the 20th and hold a public hearing on the 26th to gather opinions from both supporters and opponents.
The ordinance, jointly proposed by all members of the People Power Party in the council in early July, aims to abolish the currently enforced "Ordinance on the Establishment and Operation of the Media Foundation TBS" as of July 1 next year, remove the basis for Seoul City to provide budget support to TBS, and require TBS to operate independently without financial support from Seoul City. The ordinance will take effect after a one-year grace period following its promulgation.
However, it is uncertain whether the bill will be processed during this extraordinary session. This session runs until the 28th of this month, followed by regular sessions from November to the end of December.
