According to LG Chem on the day, this agreement was signed to contribute to the activation of the hydrogen economy by jointly developing the entire hydrogen industry value chain from overseas production of clean hydrogen in the form of ammonia, transporting it, converting it into clean hydrogen, and then utilizing it as a fuel to replace fossil fuels.
The four companies will conduct a thorough feasibility review of the ammonia-based clean hydrogen business sector and will specify future business directions based on the results.
With the commercialization of clean hydrogen accelerating through this agreement, LG Chem plans to introduce clean hydrogen to its Yeosu plant in Jeollanam-do and use it as fuel for the NCC (Naphtha Cracking Center) plant, which produces basic petrochemical feedstocks such as ethylene by cracking naphtha at high temperatures. Since clean hydrogen emits no carbon dioxide during combustion, using it as a petrochemical fuel can significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional fuels.
Additionally, LG Chem plans to cooperate on various measures to demonstrate the entire process of clean hydrogen introduction and utilization, including catalyst development necessary for converting ammonia into hydrogen.
Namhae Chemical will provide supply infrastructure such as ammonia storage tanks for the transportation, conversion, and utilization of ammonia and cooperate in establishing an optimal ammonia supply chain.
Doosan Enerbility has secured technology to decompose ammonia to produce clean hydrogen and will strive to build efficient plants related to clean hydrogen production, including turbine integration, based on its power generation business capabilities.
