Samsung Increases Mobile AP Market Share with Mid-Range Exynos
In Q2 Global Mobile AP Market, MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Apple All See Shipment Declines
Samsung Electronics Increases Mid-Range AP Shipments, Secures 7.8% Market Share
Samsung Electronics: "Exynos Aims to Be Recognized as the Best Mobile AP Brand"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Pyeonghwa] In the mobile application processor (AP) market, known as the brain of smartphones, Samsung Electronics showed growth centered on mid-to-low-end APs while major players such as MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Apple faltered. Samsung Electronics plans to focus on the system-on-chip (SoC) business, the core of system (non-memory) semiconductors, including mobile APs.
According to market research firm Omdia on the 4th, major players experienced consecutive shipment declines in the global mobile AP market in the second quarter.
Taiwan's MediaTek, the market leader with a 34.1% share in the second quarter, shipped 101 million units, down 9.6% from 110.7 million units in the previous quarter. Qualcomm, the second-largest player with a 21.8% share, also saw shipments decrease by 4.0%, from 66.7 million to 64 million units. Apple, ranking third with a 16.6% share, experienced a 13.3% drop in shipments from 56.5 million to 48.9 million units.
On the other hand, Samsung Electronics saw a sharp increase in shipments of Exynos (Samsung Electronics’ mobile AP brand) for the mid-to-low-end and budget segments, excluding premium models. This growth occurred as MediaTek, which holds a large share of the mid-to-low-end mobile AP market, showed signs of slowing down.
Samsung Electronics’ shipments of budget and mid-to-low-end Exynos APs in the second quarter reached 22.8 million units, a 53.0% increase from 14.9 million units in the previous quarter. As a result, Samsung’s market share in the second quarter rose by 3.0 percentage points from 4.8% to 7.8%.
The mobile AP industry views Samsung’s increased market share as a result of its business expansion efforts, such as equipping its mid-to-low-end APs in its own mid-to-low-end smartphones. Samsung released the Exynos 1080 this year, which was installed in the Galaxy A53 5G and A33 5G models. Additionally, the Exynos 850, launched in 2020 and installed in high-demand models like the Galaxy A13, also contributed to the shipment increase.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics aims to enhance its competitiveness in the SoC business, including mobile APs. Since last month, leaders of the System LSI Business Division, responsible for the Exynos business, have been sharing business plans through a series of content published on the company’s newsroom, concretizing these plans.
