Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Holds Typhoon 'Hinnamnor' Response Review Meeting... Jeong Hwang-geun: "Mobilize All Available Resources for Emergency Recovery in Case of Damage"
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] Jeong Hwang-geun, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, held an emergency inspection meeting on Saturday the 3rd at 4 p.m. at the Agricultural Disaster Countermeasures Situation Room to prepare for the northward approach of Typhoon No. 11 'Hinnamnor' and to review the agricultural sector's preparedness and action plans in case of typhoon damage.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's announcement, Typhoon Hinnamnor began moving northward from the afternoon of the same day and is expected to make landfall on the southern coast of Gyeongnam around the morning of the 6th. The typhoon's central pressure is forecasted to be 950 hPa with maximum wind speeds of 43 m/s, stronger than Typhoon Maemi in 2003, raising concerns about damage to crops and agricultural and livestock facilities.
To prepare for the typhoon, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is maintaining an emergency response system from the early stages of the typhoon through the Agricultural Disaster Countermeasures Situation Room, in cooperation with local governments and related agencies. Preventive guidelines are continuously being disseminated via TV caption news, text messages (SMS), and village broadcasts.
Since the 30th of last month, the ministry has been conducting special inspections of vulnerable facilities in various sectors?including food crops, irrigation facilities, horticultural crops and facilities, livestock and livestock facilities, quarantine facilities and equipment, landslide-prone areas, and solar power installations?in cooperation with local governments, the Rural Development Administration, the Korea Forest Service, the Korea Rural Community Corporation, and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation.
During the meeting, the ministry reviewed the progress of these sector-specific special inspections and re-examined measures to minimize damage such as flooding, lodging, and facility destruction.
Minister Jeong instructed all related agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, to maintain an emergency preparedness posture until the typhoon ends to minimize human and property damage to farmers. He emphasized thorough management of drainage pumps, reservoirs, and agricultural facilities.
He also stressed that in the event unavoidable typhoon damage occurs, the government, local governments, and related agencies must closely cooperate to promptly and accurately assess the damage situation and mobilize all available resources?including manpower, equipment, and funds?to immediately carry out emergency restoration.
Minister Jeong said, "We must manage the supply of major agricultural products by expanding government stockpiles and contract cultivation volumes with the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation to minimize instability in agricultural product supply." He urged government and related agency officials to pay special attention to safety to prevent human casualties during inspection and restoration processes.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs expects Typhoon Hinnamnor to partially affect the harvest of radishes and napa cabbages grown in the Gangwon-do region. Therefore, it has decided to increase the supply volume of radishes and napa cabbages by 3,100 tons beyond the original plan. From the 1st of this month until before Chuseok, an additional 1,000 tons of napa cabbage and 2,100 tons of radishes will be supplied through the vegetable price stabilization system contracted with the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation to stabilize supply. The government stockpiles will also be fully supplied during the peak Chuseok season.
