Typhoon 'Hinnamno' Moves North, Event Cancellations Follow... Nationwide Emergency Alert Issued
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] The entire country has entered an emergency state in anticipation of the northward approach of Typhoon No. 11, 'Hinnamnor.'
On the 2nd, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the cancellation of the 'Chuseok Agricultural and Marine Specialty Products Seoul Market' event, which was scheduled to be held at Seoul Plaza from the 5th to the 7th of this month, due to concerns over typhoon damage. The city made this decision after holding an emergency meeting in response to the forecasted northward movement of Typhoon No. 11, 'Hinnamnor.'
This event was organized to allow consumers to purchase over 970 agricultural and marine specialty products certified by 95 cities, counties, and the NongHyup nationwide, including Yeonggwang dried yellow corvina, Geumsan ginseng, and Korean beef, at prices 10 to 30% lower than market prices.
In Jeju, various events scheduled for the weekend and early next week have been postponed, and cancellations of tourist reservations are continuing.
Jeju City postponed the opening ceremony of the '2022 Jeju Leisure Healing Festival,' which was to be held at Hamdeok Beach on the 3rd, to the 17th. Jeju Tourism Organization also postponed an environmental campaign prepared for the 2nd to the 9th.
The tourism industry is also facing difficulties. Although it is a weekend when tourists usually flock, inquiries about reservation cancellations are increasing, and actual cancellations are following. The reservation rate for flights to Jeju dropped below 50% around the 5th, when Jeju is expected to be within the typhoon's influence. The tourism industry expects further cancellations as the typhoon moves northward.
From this day, all access to Hallasan Mountain has been completely restricted. All hiking trails on Hallasan are expected to remain closed until the typhoon passes over Jeju next week.
Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do announced the cancellation of the Mokpo Marine W Show, which was scheduled to take place for 30 minutes starting at 8 p.m. on the 3rd. The city made this decision considering the heightened tension due to the typhoon's approach and the public sentiment favoring minimizing damage.
The Dancing Sea Fountain performance (scheduled for the 3rd to 4th) was also canceled for facility maintenance.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment announced on the same day that, in preparation for heavy rainfall from Typhoon No. 11 Hinnamnor, all eight weirs on the Nakdong River will be fully opened at 9 a.m. on the 4th.
After opening, the discharge rates per second for the eight weirs (Sangju, Nakdan, Gumi, Chilgok, Gangjeong-Goryeong, Dalseong, Hapcheon-Changnyeong, and Changnyeong-Haman) will range from 5,500 tons (Sangju Weir) to 14,300 tons (Changnyeong-Haman Weir).
