Joo Ho-young's 'End of January, Early February' Party Convention... Kim Ki-hyun Warns of "Concerns Over Loss of National Momentum" (Summary)
[Asia Economy reporters Lee Ji-eun and Kwon Hyun-ji] Joo Ho-young, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, stated on the 21st regarding the timing of the party convention to elect the next party leadership, "If the convention starts around December, the new leadership will be elected by the end of January or around February." In response, Rep. Kim Ki-hyun, who has advocated for an 'early party convention,' expressed concern, saying, "It could lead to a loss of momentum in national governance."
Chairman Joo appeared on KBS's 'Sunday Diagnosis Live' that day and said, "Many lawmakers and party members agree that the party convention should start after the regular National Assembly session ends," explaining his position.
The timing of the party convention affects the possibility of former People Power Party leader Lee Jun-seok running for the leadership. If the convention is held after January 9 next year, when Lee's party membership suspension ends, his candidacy remains possible.
Regarding this, Chairman Joo said, "Lee Jun-seok has expressed the opinion that the convention should be held after June next year. However, it is not desirable for the Emergency Response Committee to last too long," adding, "Holding a party convention to elect the party leader during an important National Assembly session could be perceived by the public as the ruling party fighting for leadership while the country and the party are facing difficulties."
He continued, "The outcome of Lee's injunction request also has some influence, and investigations into him are ongoing. Considering these factors, once uncertainties are removed, we can set a date," but also expressed concern, saying, "Currently, it is expected that the convention will start after the regular National Assembly session ends, likely at some point in January. There is a possibility of controversy arising in connection with the lifting of Lee's party membership suspension."
On the 20th, Kim Ki-hyun, a member of the People Power Party, was talking with former Minister of Strategy and Finance Park Jae-wan, who appeared as a lecturer at the People Power Party study group 'Innovation 24 New Future' breakfast lecture held at the National Assembly. Kim, one of the next party leadership candidates, wrote on his Facebook the same day, "The first six months of a precious early administration period are so important that they can outweigh the remaining four years and six months," and pointed out, "If the party's emergency situation is not resolved even after the new year begins, the abnormal state will continue at the start of the new year, which could lead to a loss of momentum in national governance."

He added, "If our party fails to swiftly resolve internal issues during such a critical time, it will face difficulties gaining trust from the public," emphasizing, "To support the successful governance of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, it is both a duty and a natural course to quickly resolve the party's emergency situation and restore normalcy for the people and party members."
