Jung Gang-il, Executive Director of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business Division, said this on the 16th at a media briefing held at the Taepyeong-ro Building in Jung-gu, Seoul, introducing the company's gaming screen, 'Odyssey Ark.'
The Odyssey Ark is a next-generation gaming monitor newly released by Samsung Electronics. It features a 55-inch large screen with a 1000R curvature curved display. It supports 4K resolution based on Quantum MiniLED, a high refresh rate of 165 hertz (Hz), and a 1 millisecond (ms, one-thousandth of a second) response time based on GTG (Grey to Grey). It is a product introduced to target the new generation heavy game users who pursue various multi-experiences such as internet browsing and content viewing while enjoying games simultaneously.
Executive Director Jung explained, "Through consumer research, we confirmed that the biggest pain point in gaming screens is the size issue. When asked what size is appropriate, 51% of all respondents answered 55 inches," adding, "We concluded that 55 inches provides the best immersive experience on a desk, which led to the product launch."
Samsung Electronics enhanced product completeness by producing prototypes, analyzing user environments, and verifying concepts with professional gamers. To suit the preferences of game users who favor multitasking, it included a wheel-shaped dedicated controller (Ark Dial) for quick switching and easy control.
Vertical screen support was added to provide advantages for viewing vertical content due to the increased use of mobile devices. The Odyssey Ark supports multi-screen with 4 splits horizontally and 3 splits vertically. Executive Director Jung said, "The biggest differentiation of the Odyssey Ark is that users can enjoy (games) at the desired angle, whether horizontal or vertical."
Samsung Electronics introduced the Odyssey Ark as a 'gaming screen' rather than a gaming monitor. This is to emphasize that it can integrate and provide desktop and various console and PC gaming experiences rather than limiting its function to a monitor. Since there is no limit to consumers' desire for screen immersion and experience, Samsung Electronics explained that their gaming screen could become larger than 55 inches in the future. However, whether there will be consumer demand remains to be seen.
The product's target age group is heavy game users in their 20s and 30s. Samsung Electronics plans a global launch of the Odyssey Ark starting with the UK. Online sales will begin this month, and offline sales will start in earnest next month. The official domestic launch is on September 7.
