As the rain that started falling in the morning became heavier in the afternoon, Mayor Hong and Assemblyman Kim visited the site to inspect preparations for heavy rain.
According to the city, the drainage-deficient areas in Uichang-gu are lowlands lower than the flood level of Changwon Stream at 5.63m, making it difficult for water to naturally drain during rainfall, resulting in poor internal water drainage.
The drainage capacity, which indicates how much water can flow at a given slope, is also insufficient in the existing stormwater pipes.
The city announced that as a short-term measure to prevent damage from heavy rain, it dredged nearby stormwater pipes and stormwater boxes.
Subsequently, the area will be designated as a ‘Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District’ for comprehensive maintenance. Currently, feasibility studies and basic planning services are being conducted to designate the improvement district.

Mayor Hong said, “Recently, there have been many casualties in houses and stores due to record-breaking heavy rain exceeding 100mm per hour in the metropolitan area. We will do our best in disaster prevention projects to prevent similar cases from occurring.” He added, “I requested cooperation at the National Assembly level, including national funding support from National Assembly member Kim Youngseon, to designate the area as a Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District and establish fundamental disaster prevention measures.”
