The Korea Meteorological Administration held a briefing on the 7th and forecasted that from the 8th to the 11th, heavy rain will fall mainly in the central region due to the influence of a stationary front.
From the 8th to the 9th, the Seoul metropolitan area and inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province are expected to receive rainfall exceeding 300mm in some places, with precipitation reaching 100 to 200mm. On the east coast of Gangwon and northern Chungcheong Province, some areas will see more than 150mm, and northern Chungcheong, northern Gyeongbuk, and up to northern Gyeongbuk will receive about 30 to 80mm of rain.
This rain is caused by a stationary front similar to the monsoon front, which is long east to west and narrow north to south, so there is a possibility of heavy rain in narrow areas. Very heavy rain of 50 to 80mm or more per hour is expected.
More than 300mm of rain is also expected in North Korea near the Demilitarized Zone. Due to heavy rain in the upper reaches of the Imjin River, Hantan River, and Bukhan River, flooding should be prepared for downstream areas. Attention should also be paid to small stream flooding, retaining wall collapse, landslides, and falling rocks.
There may be brief breaks in the rain between the 8th and 9th and between the 10th and 11th. After the 10th, very heavy and intense rain is expected mainly in the central region. The rain from the 10th to the 11th may be stronger than the rainfall on the 8th and 9th.
Woo Jin-gyu, a forecast analyst at the Korea Meteorological Administration, explained, "If warm and humid air from the south flows in and dry air from the north penetrates, heavier rain may fall," adding, "We believe there is a high possibility that precipitation on the 10th and 11th will be stronger than on the 8th and 9th."
In the southern regions and Jeju Island, no rain is expected, but heatwaves and tropical nights are likely to prevail. Due to the influence of abundant water vapor in the air, localized showers may occur.
The Korea Meteorological Administration explained, "Heavy rain can occur at any time. When warm and humid air from the south strengthens the stationary front, it is more likely to be at night or early morning rather than during the day, but cold and dry air from the north can strengthen the front at any time."
