Chairman Chung Eui-sun Meets President Jokowi... Discusses 'Cooperation' in Future Industry Sectors

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who visited Korea, held a meeting with Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group.
On the 28th, Hyundai Motor Group announced that Chairman Chung met with President Joko at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul to share their smart city vision.
The separate meeting between President Joko Widodo and Chairman Chung is interpreted as a move to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Hyundai Motor Group in future industries.
Hyundai Motor Group possesses core capabilities necessary for building smart cities, including a smart city vision to develop human-centered cities by connecting people, revitalizing communities, and integrating future mobility solutions, as well as expertise in mobility sectors such as automobiles, Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), and railway vehicles, along with construction, hydrogen energy, and logistics.
In particular, mobility solutions such as electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, autonomous vehicles, AAM, PBV (Purpose Built Vehicles), and robotics are being developed to be organically connected within smart cities.
The Indonesian government is currently promoting the relocation of the capital to East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo to address balanced national development and overpopulation in the capital, Jakarta. The new capital is planned to be built as a smart city.
President Widodo expressed expectations that Hyundai Motor Group will play a significant role in the growth of Indonesia’s eco-friendly mobility, including electric vehicles, and reportedly hoped that Hyundai Motor Group would become a key partner providing important solutions such as clean mobility during the construction of Indonesia’s new administrative capital.
Chairman Chung stated, "Hyundai Motor Group has a diverse business portfolio encompassing finished vehicles, construction, logistics, robotics, AAM, and eco-friendly sectors," and added, "We hope cooperation with Indonesia will expand from eco-friendly areas to advanced future fields."
Additionally, Chairman Chung expressed gratitude to President Joko Widodo for selecting Hyundai’s eco-friendly vehicles, the G80 electric car and Ioniq 5, as official protocol vehicles for the G20 event to be held in Bali, Indonesia, this November. He also expressed hope that electrification would accelerate in Indonesia. Furthermore, Chairman Chung explained to President Widodo the competitiveness and strengths of Busan as a candidate city for the 2030 World Expo and requested Indonesia’s support.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Indonesian Minister of Maritime Investment Coordinating Board Luhut Pandjaitan and other members of President Widodo’s delegation visited Hyundai Motor and Kia’s Namyang Technology Research Center. Minister Luhut and others watched videos and presentations on Hyundai Motor Group’s smart city vision, observed the smart city master model, and witnessed demonstrations of Hyundai Motor Group’s future smart mobility solutions. They also test-rode the Level 4 autonomous Solati RoboShuttle, observed hydrogen refueling demonstrations of the hydrogen fuel cell truck Xcient, and toured hydrogen fuel cell vehicles including the Nexo, hydrogen fuel cell buses, and hydrogen-powered cleaning vehicles.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to lead the Indonesian market with various products including electric vehicles from the Hyundai Motor Indonesia plant, which was completed in March, and contribute to Indonesia’s rise as a hub for ASEAN automobile exports. Centered on the Ioniq 5, the first locally produced electric vehicle among brands operating in Indonesia, Hyundai aims to grow as the leading electric vehicle brand in the Indonesian market. Furthermore, with the full-scale mass production of the battery cell joint factory in 2024, Hyundai plans to establish a solid electric vehicle leadership not only in Indonesia but throughout the ASEAN region.
