Sales from July 11-17 Including Chobok
Lotte Mart Sales Increase Over 70%
Emart and Homeplus Sales Rise About 100%
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Domestic chicken sales in the mart industry have significantly increased in response to the Boknal (the hottest days of summer).
According to Lotte Mart on the 25th, domestic chicken sales growth rate from June 11 to 17, the week including Chobok (the first of the three hottest days), increased by more than 70% compared to the previous year. Lotte Mart held a discount event on health-promoting aquatic and livestock products, including animal welfare chicken and abalone from Wando, from June 14 to 20 targeting Chobok.
Emart's domestic chicken sales also grew by 99% during the same period. Emart is running the “End of Price” discount event until the 27th, which includes Jungbok (the second hottest day), to stabilize prices and capture demand during Boknal. Fresh chicken (antibiotic-free two young chickens), which sees high demand before and after Boknal, is sold at 5,988 KRW after a 40% discount from 9,980 KRW when paid with the event card. Emart prepared 200,000 packs, which is four times the average monthly sales volume in June. Emart started adjusting shipment volumes three months before Chobok and secured price competitiveness by doubling the quantity compared to last year through bulk purchasing.
Homeplus also saw about a 100% increase in domestic chicken sales during the same period. Especially, sales on the day before Boknal, June 15, surged by about 213% compared to the same period last year. Homeplus held the “Super Saving Chobok Festival” as part of the price stabilization project from June 14 to 20. All fresh chicken products were available at up to 40% discounted prices when paid with the event card.

With rising grocery prices and the upcoming Jungbok and Malbok (the third hottest day), the industry plans to continue various events. An industry official said, “Chicken demand significantly increases in July and August when Boknal occurs, and this year, due to high prices and other factors, more customers are buying chicken at marts and cooking it at home,” adding, “We are planning various discount events to capture this demand.”
