Accelerating Teacher Capacity Building for Carbon Neutrality in Response to Climate Crisis and Environmental Disasters
Gyeongbuk Office of Education Conducts Training to Enhance Carbon Neutrality Competency for Teachers
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] The Gyeongbuk Office of Education is conducting teacher training to solidify environmental education through a mindset shift among teachers in the era of climate crisis and environmental disasters, and to enhance understanding and practical capabilities of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
On June 27, in Seoul, tropical nights were observed for the first time ever in June since weather observations began, with tropical nights recorded at 62 weather observation points nationwide.
Not only in South Korea but worldwide, record-breaking heatwaves, floods, and droughts are occurring due to abnormal weather patterns. In this climate crisis era, the Gyeongbuk Office of Education is conducting teacher training to develop practical capabilities for Education for Sustainable Development.
This training, planned under the themes of forest, marine, and carbon neutrality leadership courses, consists of eight courses across three fields and is intensively conducted during the summer vacation period to minimize class disruptions for teachers.
The "Carbon Neutrality Practice Training at Schools" held at the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum in Bonghwa, Gyeongbuk, is a 3-day, 2-night course offered in two sessions (July 20?22 and July 27?29). It aims to expand environmental education by strengthening teachers' climate crisis and disaster response capabilities and their skills in curriculum and career guidance through forest education based on sustainable forest ecosystems, arboretums, and school environmental gardening.
The "Carbon Neutral Education Environmental Leadership Course" at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Environmental Training Institute in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, is conducted in three sessions: an early childhood teacher course (August 9?11), and two sessions for elementary and secondary school teachers (July 26?28 and August 2?4). This course aims to enhance teaching capabilities for systematic ecological transition education and experiential school environmental education through acquiring educational knowledge and participation.
The "Marine Environment Training Course" at the National Youth Marine Center in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk, runs for 4 days and 3 nights in three sessions (August 2?5, August 16?19, and August 22?25). It focuses on understanding the marine environment through investigations of marine waste, desertification of the sea, marine structures, and marine organisms, and seeks carbon neutrality practices to strengthen marine environment conservation leadership.
