Data Processing Within SSD Enhances System Performance and Energy Efficiency Simultaneously
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] Samsung Electronics announced on the 21st that it has developed the '2nd generation SmartSSD' with double the computing performance.
When Samsung Electronics' 2nd generation SmartSSD is applied to a system, compared to systems equipped with general SSDs, the processing time for some database operations is reduced by up to 50%, energy consumption by up to 70%, and CPU usage by up to 97%. This product, which offers optimal performance and high power efficiency, also won the 'CES Innovation Award' in 2021.
Samsung Electronics' SmartSSD is one of the computational storage devices that embed a processor for computation, enabling data processing within the storage itself. Computational storage is gaining attention as a next-generation storage device that allows more efficient services in fields requiring processing of vast amounts of data, such as the metaverse, artificial intelligence (AI)·big data, deep learning·machine learning, and 5G·6G.
Unlike conventional SSDs that only have data storage functions, Samsung Electronics' SmartSSD incorporates computing capabilities inside the SSD, performing computations directly within the SSD during specific data processing. This minimizes data movement between the CPU, GPU, and RAM, simultaneously improving system performance and energy efficiency.
