'The Essence of Comic Acting' Musical ... Jung Sung-hwa "Mixed Yoon Yeo-jeong and Kim Soo-mi Characters"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The movie "Mrs. Doubtfire" is coming to Korea as a musical. The story follows a careless husband (Daniel) who, after getting divorced, dresses as a woman to frequently see his children and works as a helper in his ex-wife's house. The 1993 film of the same name was a sensational hit, topping the U.S. box office for 11 consecutive weeks. It is considered one of Robin Williams' representative works.
In this performance, presented in a "non-replica" version adapted to suit domestic sensibilities, the role of Daniel will be played by Lim Chang-jung, Jung Sung-hwa, and Yang Jun-mo. They will showcase not only dancing and singing but also tap dance, beatboxing using a loop machine, and rap.
Notably, Lim Chang-jung returns to musicals after 10 years through "Mrs. Doubtfire." At a press conference held on the 19th at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel, he said, "It's such a difficult work that I wonder if I can really do it. I often have nightmares about going on stage without being fully prepared." He added, "(Nevertheless) I feel like this opportunity is a gift from God for all the hardships I've endured. I will show you a truly magnificent performance."
Actor Jung Sung-hwa, who has frequently performed in female roles in previous works, revealed his unique acting philosophy. He said, "I thought I could just overly interpret the aspects I have." He explained, "I created the character by mixing an elegant woman with a neighborhood grandmother. I slightly blended elements of actresses Youn Yuh-jung and Kim Soo-mi." He continued, "This is a work that encompasses all of show business. You can see it as the Jung Sung-hwa comprehensive gift set. I poured in all the ideas I have been thinking about since my comedian days. I will make you cry and laugh a lot," expressing his aspirations.
Actor Yang Jun-mo, who is challenging his first comedic role in female attire, said, "This time, I wore a skirt and stockings for the first time. The character and personality are completely opposite to mine, but I am working hard to become Daniel." He added, "There are many 'quick change' moments where the makeup changes in just a few seconds. Please look forward to it." The makeup includes special effects makeup by the globally renowned Technical Art Studio Cell, a team that worked on films like "Parasite" and "Train to Busan." It is known that it took two months just to create the masks for this performance.
Director Kim Dong-yeon, who produced hit musicals such as "Death Note" and "A Gentleman's Guide," said, "Musicals were born to bring joy and laughter. They are well-suited for comedy." He added, "We focused on localizing the humor for Korean audiences. Talented actors are participating, making it enjoyable to create."
