Daejeon City Promotes Creation of 'Urban Convergence Special Zone' in Original Downtown Area
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City is promoting the creation of an urban convergence special zone in the old downtown area.
The city announced on the 19th that it recently held a briefing session on the establishment of the basic plan for the ‘Daejeon Urban Convergence Special Zone.’ The core of creating the urban convergence special zone is to develop a high-density innovation space equipped with complex infrastructure such as industry, housing, and culture, allowing companies and talent to gather in the downtown areas of regional large cities.
Currently, the regional large cities promoting the creation of urban convergence special zones are four metropolitan cities: Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, and Busan.
The city plans to create the urban convergence special zone in the old downtown area, including the Daejeon Station area and the former Chungnam Provincial Government Office site. This aims to revitalize the old downtown, which was once the growth axis of Daejeon. Earlier, in March last year, the city was designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as an urban convergence special zone for the Seonhwa district and the Daejeon Station area.
Based on this, the city plans not only to restore the old functions of the downtown but also to make it a core hub for the future Chungcheong region mega-city.
The briefing session proceeded by reporting the current progress, including the conceptual plan for the core projects of the urban convergence special zone being established based on these contents, followed by a Q&A session.
The main contents of the briefing session included ▲ Establishing a central region science and technology enterprise innovation and growth platform ▲ Remodeling the west plaza of Daejeon Station ▲ Building a startup and cultural hub in the Seonhwa district ▲ Creating a public transportation-centered street and improving the landscape in the Jungang-ro area ▲ Securing sites for relocating public institutions linked with the innovation city.
In particular, Mayor Lee Jang-woo of Daejeon ordered specific measures to strengthen the convention function of the urban convergence special zone, solve parking problems in the old downtown, plan for landmark architecture, design spaces for large-scale festivals such as the ‘Daejeon 0 o’clock Festival,’ and ways to pass through the west plaza, Jungang-ro, and the station market all at once, aiming to become a first-class economic city.
The mayor emphasized, “With the establishment of the basic plan for the urban convergence special zone, Daejeon will lay the foundation to become a first-class city by having the nation’s largest convention function, parking facilities that can accommodate many visitors, world-class architecture, and various festivals.”
