View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] In the southern regions under heavy rain warnings, over 100mm of monsoon rain fell overnight. Heavy rain continues during the morning commute, with Jeolla region and Jeju Island experiencing rain until the afternoon, and Gyeongsang region seeing very heavy rain of 30-50mm per hour from afternoon to night.
On the 18th, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported that due to a low-pressure system accompanying a stationary front, rain is falling mainly in the southern Chungcheong region, southern areas, and Jeju Island, and will expand to most parts of the country by morning. The southern coast of Jeollanam-do and the coastal areas of Gyeongsang will experience very heavy rain around 70mm per hour from afternoon to night.
From midnight to 7 a.m. on the same day, over 100mm of rain fell in the Jeolla region. Major rainfall amounts include Okdo (Shinan) 110.5mm, Jindo-gun 96.1mm, Haksan (Yeongam) 93.5mm, Saryangdo (Tongyeong) 60.5mm, Wido (Buan) 50.0mm, Hadong 48.0mm, and Halla Ecological Forest (Jeju) 46.0mm.
Currently, heavy rain warnings are in effect for Jeollanam-do (Jindo, Shinan, Yeongam, Boseong, Goheung), and heavy rain advisories have been issued for Ulsan, Busan, Gwangju, Jeju Island (Jeju Mountain area, eastern part), Gyeongsangnam-do, Heuksando, Hongdo, and parts of Jeollanam-do and Jeonbuk.
The KMA urged, "Very heavy and intense rain is falling on the southern coast of Jeollanam-do and the coastal areas of Gyeongsangnam-do, coinciding with high tide periods, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying coastal areas. It is essential to inspect drainage systems and thoroughly prepare for facility management and safety accidents."
Expected rainfall until the 19th is over 250mm along the Gyeongsangnam-do coast, 50-150mm in Gyeongsangnam-do, over 150mm in Jeollanam-do and Jeju Mountain areas, 30-100mm in Jeolla region, southern Gyeongbuk region, and Jeju Island, 20-80mm in southern Chungcheong and northern Gyeongbuk, and 5-40mm in northern Chungcheong, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo. Southern Gyeonggi and southern Gangwon will receive about 5-40mm of rain until the afternoon of the 18th, while Seoul is expected to see less than 0.1mm of raindrops.
The highest daytime temperatures on the day will range from 24 to 31 degrees Celsius, similar to average levels. Temperatures will rise quickly in areas where the rain stops, continuing the heatwave. Due to smooth atmospheric dispersion and precipitation effects, fine dust concentrations will be at 'Good' to 'Moderate' levels across all regions.
Strong winds of 8-16 meters per second, with gusts exceeding 20 meters per second, will blow in the coastal areas of Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeju Island. From the southern part of the southern Yellow Sea, the southern sea, Jeju sea, and the southern East Sea, strong winds of 9-16 meters per second and waves of 1.5-4.0 meters will persist until the 19th, and in the outer southern sea of Jeju and the eastern southern sea until early morning of the 20th. Ships engaged in navigation or fishing should exercise special caution.
