Biden Visits Middle East After Inauguration... Emphasizes "Deep-rooted Bond" in Israel Visit
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] U.S. President Joe Biden has officially begun his first Middle East visit since taking office, starting with Israel.
According to local media, President Biden arrived at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel, on the 13th (local time) aboard Air Force One. Upon arrival, he stated in a speech, "The United States and Israel share a deep, bone-deep bond." He emphasized, "Over the next few days, we will address all agendas concerning the shared future of the United States and Israel," adding, "We are united by shared values and vision."
Yair Lapid, the interim Prime Minister who welcomed President Biden and his delegation, said, "The relationship between President Biden and Israel has always been close," and added, "He is Israel's closest friend."
This is President Biden's first visit to the Middle East since taking office. It is particularly notable as he visits major oil-producing countries amid soaring oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. After spending two days in Israel, he will move on to Saudi Arabia.
Local media reported that President Biden and Prime Minister Lapid will sign agreements to strengthen cooperation in areas such as pandemic preparedness, climate change, artificial intelligence, and security. On the same day, President Biden toured the operational bases of the low-altitude air defense system 'Iron Dome' and the medium-range air defense system 'David's Sling,' and received a briefing on the next-generation interception system 'Iron Beam,' which uses laser beams. Lapid's office confirmed that international cooperation on the Iranian nuclear issue will also be discussed.
