[Box Office] Marvel Soars... 'Thor 4' Tops First Weekend, 'Top Gun' Draws 4.65 Million Viewers
'Crime City 2' Rises to 13th Place in All-Time Box Office Rankings
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Marvel was indeed strong. The movie "Thor: Love and Thunder" (hereafter "Thor 4") topped the box office on its opening weekend.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales system on the 11th, "Thor 4" attracted 1,184,510 viewers over the three-day weekend (August 8-10), securing the number one spot at the box office. It was screened 30,056 times across 2,044 theaters, with a revenue share of 49.9%. Since its release on the 6th, the film's cumulative audience reached 1,764,934.
Although this start falls short of the opening weekend audiences of Marvel films "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (1.71 million) and "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (1.74 million), it surpassed the simultaneous opening weekend audiences of last month's "Jurassic World: Dominion" and "Top Gun: Maverick."
"Thor: Love and Thunder" is the third sequel following "Thor" (2011), "Thor: The Dark World" (2013), and "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017), with director Taika Waititi returning to the helm.
"Top Gun: Maverick," which had held the top spot for two consecutive weeks after its release, dropped to second place with 804,306 viewers but continued its success with a cumulative audience of 4,654,137.
"Decision to Leave," winner of the Best Director award at the 75th Cannes Film Festival (Park Chan-wook), ranked third with 204,483 viewers. Since its release on the 29th of last month, the film has attracted a total of 885,287 viewers.
This year's first 10 million viewer film, "Crime City 2," surpassed "Aladdin" to rank 13th in all-time box office with a cumulative audience of 12,588,779.
The Chinese animation "Big Shark 4: Sea Dinosaur Adventure" entered the charts at sixth place, while "Buzz Lightyear" remained at tenth.
