Samsung Life "Actively Preventing Insurance Fraud by Automatically Collecting Online Data"
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Life Insurance announced on the 11th that it is actively utilizing 'Web Crawling,' a technology that automatically collects data online, to prevent insurance fraud.
Samsung Life Insurance SIU (Special Investigation Unit for Insurance Fraud) secured 504 posts related to cataracts promoted through internet communities and blogs in the first half of this year using web crawling.
These posts, containing information about medical fee discounts and events, are all advertisements posted by brokers linked to insurance fraud. Among them, four hospitals were referred for investigation for 'inducing and mediating patients involved with brokers other than insurance fraud.'
Samsung Life Insurance introduced the 'Fraud Detection System (FDS)' in September 2014, the first in the insurance industry, and recently has been detecting insurance fraud using web crawling.
Web crawling is a technology that automatically collects data online, and Samsung Life Insurance has developed its own system to utilize it in detecting insurance fraud. Last year, it detected 26 hospitals suspected of inducing and mediating insurance fraud related to cataract indemnity insurance and completed administrative reports.
Besides cataract cases, nine cases were detected where rhinoplasty was disguised as disease-related surgery to promote improper indemnity claims. Analyzing posts on plastic surgery apps revealed that some hospitals manipulated rhinoplasty reviews as disease treatment and issued false medical records such as hospitalization, currently under investigation.
Last year, the amount detected for insurance fraud reached a record high of 943.4 billion KRW. This is a 5% (44.8 billion KRW) increase compared to 2020, and the average amount detected per person also rose by 6.3% (6 million KRW) to 9.7 million KRW.
