Korean Air Passenger Plane Departing from Istanbul Makes Emergency Landing in Azerbaijan Due to Engine Malfunction (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] A Korean Air passenger plane heading from Istanbul, Turkey, to Incheon International Airport made an emergency landing in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, due to an engine malfunction.
According to Korean Air on the 10th, flight KE9956 (A330-200), which departed Istanbul International Airport at 6:25 PM local time the previous day, detected an aircraft malfunction about 1 hour and 30 minutes after takeoff and made an emergency landing at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku.
Flight KE9956, which was scheduled to arrive at Incheon Airport at 10:30 AM that day, changed its destination to the nearest airport after an engine malfunction message occurred during the flight and landed at Baku Airport.
Korean Air explained that a vibration message was detected from engine number 2 (right side) during the flight. Accordingly, the pilot reportedly announced over the cabin broadcast that there was an issue with one of the aircraft's engines.
Some passengers witnessed sparks coming from the engine, and fire trucks were dispatched when the aircraft landed at the airport. Passengers seated on the right wing side of the aircraft reportedly felt vibrations, noise, and even heat.
There were 215 passengers and 10 crew members on board the aircraft.
Korean Air dispatched Istanbul branch staff to Baku Airport and provided blankets and other items to passengers waiting at the airport. They are also currently processing entry visa issuance through a local ground handling company. Passengers are expected to move to local hotels.
