This was said by a Democratic Party official two weeks after Woo Sang-ho took office as the emergency response committee chairman. Following consecutive defeats in the presidential and local elections, Woo's appointment is seen as helping the party, which had been in turmoil, regain relative stability. The official also said, "Chairman Woo acted like a sponge, serving as a buffer to absorb conflicts within the party."
After the local election defeat, the Democratic Party was in chaos as if a beehive had been disturbed. However, after the establishment of Chairman Woo's system, conflicts subsided to a manageable level, while the transition from the ruling party to the opposition accelerated.
The Woo leadership is notable for encouraging internal party discussions to hear diverse voices rather than suppressing conflicts through iron-fisted rule. Last week, a workshop held with affiliated lawmakers focused not only on typical policies but also on internal party issues, earning praise as a 'political workshop.' The aim was to have an open conversation. Participants who attended the workshop evaluated it as helpful for communication within the party.
The inclusion of policy experts such as Lee Yong-woo and Han Jeong-ae in the emergency committee was also positive. These prominent policy experts within the party voiced their insights on current issues, which was well regarded. The current emergency committee is characterized by members with less factional bias and proven capabilities.

No matter how well the current emergency committee performs, it will be replaced after the party convention on August 28, just two months and one day later. Although there may be variables such as amendments to the convention rules, the new leadership is likely to be composed of well-known figures who represent the strong voices of enthusiastic party members. There is an assessment that the emergency committee, formed in a crisis after election defeats, feels more stable than the leadership elected through the party convention, which reflects party members and public opinion. The Democratic Party faces the challenge of reforming its structure through the party convention. The Woo emergency committee has suggested the direction for this change.
