Gwangju Police Agency Holds Unveiling Ceremony for Memorial Park
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] On the morning of the 23rd, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency held an unveiling ceremony at the 'Gwangju Police Memorial Park' established in the residents' rest area within the agency building, honoring the sacrifices of police officers who died in the line of duty.
The event was attended by about 150 people, including 40 bereaved families of fallen police officers, the Chairman of the Gwangju Autonomous Police Commission, the Gwangju Police Veterans Association, the Gwangju Metropolitan City 6.25 War Veteran Police Association, the Police Bereaved Families Association, and police cooperation organizations.
In 2018, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency created the 'Gwangju Police Memorial Hall' in an annex building to honor the spirits of senior and fellow officers who dedicated themselves to the nation and the people. However, due to the limited space and poor accessibility, the agency began constructing a new memorial monument in April and renovated the memorial facilities.
The Gwangju Police Memorial Monument carefully engraved the names of a total of 253 police officers who died in the line of duty at police stations in the Gwangju area since the establishment of the Gwangju Police, including the 52 officers inscribed in the existing Gwangju Police Memorial Hall, onto nameplates.
The memorial tower erected at the center of the park is designed to symbolize 'Gwangju Metropolitan City' by representing the five districts of Gwangsan-gu, Dong-gu, Seo-gu, Nam-gu, and Buk-gu with five pillars.
Overall, the memorial monument embraces the memorial tower, symbolizing the hope that the police heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation and the people will protect and embrace Gwangju.
At the unveiling ceremony attended by bereaved families, Im Yong-hwan, Chief of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, stated, “We pledge to inherit the noble will of the seniors gathered here and do our best to create a safer Gwangju based on citizens' trust as a strong and fair Gwangju police force.”
Additionally, all employees of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency comforted the pain of the bereaved families and vowed to uphold the noble spirit of sacrifice of the fallen police officers to maintain public safety in Gwangju more stably.
The bereaved families who attended the event expressed their gratitude to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and related personnel for providing a memorial space where they can honor their beloved family members.
