‘Wild Jeoneo Festival’ Will Be Held This Year! ... Sacheon City Samcheonpo Port Festival
Held from July 21 to 24 for 4 days in the Dongseogeumdong Palpo Food Specialty District area
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The representative food festival of Sacheon City, Gyeongnam, the ‘Sacheon City Samcheonpo Port Wild Gizzard Shad Festival,’ will be held this year.
According to Sacheon City on the 20th, the ‘19th Sacheon City Samcheonpo Port Wild Gizzard Shad Festival,’ where visitors can enjoy the taste of summer gizzard shad, will be held for four days from July 21 to 24 in the Dongseo Geumdong Palpo Food Specialty District area.
The festival is the earliest gizzard shad festival held nationwide after the gizzard shad fishing ban is lifted, and has established itself as Gyeongnam’s representative summer food festival that attracts gourmets from all over the country to one place.
The gizzard shad caught during this period is also called ‘summer fresh gizzard shad,’ known for its tender flesh and a melting sensation in the mouth even when eaten with the bones.
This event features gizzard shad rich in unsaturated fatty acids such as DHA and EPA, which are excellent not only for brain development but also for preventing adult diseases. The gizzard shad will be prepared in various dishes such as gizzard shad sashimi, seasoned gizzard shad, grilled gizzard shad, and gizzard shad sashimi rice bowl, expected to captivate the taste buds of many food lovers.
In particular, the ‘Barehanded Gizzard Shad Catching Experience,’ which has been the most popular event at the festival every year, will be operated twice a day for three days from the 22nd to the 24th to encourage more tourist participation. To enhance the lively experience, it will be conducted according to different age groups.
Additionally, various experiential events and programs such as a traveling opening ceremony, congratulatory performances, free tasting sessions, and singing contests will be prepared to captivate the eyes and ears of tourists.
The Samcheonpo Port Wild Gizzard Shad Festival, which has been held immediately after the end of the gizzard shad fishing ban every year, was completely canceled for two consecutive years in 2020 and 2021 due to social distancing measures amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and will be held again after three years.
