"Gyeonggi-do Apartment Construction Site Safety Accident Risks Persist"… Province Catches 139 Cases
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province announced on the 20th that it conducted safety inspections at 10 apartment construction sites in the province from the 2nd to the 10th, ahead of the full-scale rainy season, and discovered 139 issues such as poor fixation of temporary fences.
The province selected 10 construction sites vulnerable to heavy rain, including underground excavation and earth retaining temporary facilities, adjacent to forest land or rivers, or large complexes with more than 1,000 households, and conducted safety inspections in collaboration with private experts, divided into architecture, construction safety, civil engineering, and fire safety fields.
Examples by field showed that in the architecture sector, there were problems such as ▲ absence of horizontal braces (diagonal braces to prevent frame deformation) on props (supports), ▲ poor support of scaffolding bases (temporary structures installed to work at heights), and ▲ lack of scaffolding platforms and safety railings.
In the construction sector, issues included ▲ lack of secured safe passage for workers, ▲ poor fixation of temporary fences, ▲ absence of safety fences around sedimentation ponds, and ▲ negligence in dispersing and inspecting flood prevention materials. In the civil engineering sector, many issues were pointed out such as ▲ poor slope protection measures, ▲ poor installation of retaining plates, ▲ lack of secured drainage channels, and ▲ negligence in managing sedimentation ponds.
In the fire safety and heatwave preparedness sector, major issues included ▲ negligence in safety management such as electrical leakage, ▲ failure to disperse and inspect fire extinguishers, and ▲ lack of rest facilities for workers.
The province immediately addressed urgent or minor issues on site. Additionally, the 139 identified issues were notified to the respective city and county offices to take appropriate measures within a few days.
Ko Yong-su, head of the Gyeonggi Province Department of Multi-family Housing, stated, "Before the full rainy season arrives, we will do our best to prevent various accidents through thorough safety management, including establishing flood prevention measures and inspecting drainage facilities."
