GS Retail held a business agreement ceremony with the Marine Stewardship Council yesterday at the GS Retail conference room in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to "strengthen the sales and promotion of sustainable seafood." The ceremony was attended by Kwak Yong-gu, Head of the Super MD Division (Executive Director) at GS Retail, and Seo Jong-seok, MSC Korea representative.
The Marine Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organization established to minimize overfishing and marine environmental destruction and to ensure a stable supply of seafood in the future. It sets international standards (MSC certification) and conducts campaigns encouraging governments, private companies, and fishermen worldwide to comply. Currently, about 19% of the global catch is produced from MSC-certified fisheries and sold with the MSC eco-label. The MSC eco-label is only attached to seafood certified according to the MSC Fisheries Standard, which is the scientific basis for sustainable fisheries (wild-caught, traceability, sustainability).
Through this business agreement, both parties agreed to cooperate in building a friendly partnership, expanding and encouraging the purchase of sustainable seafood, developing sustainable seafood consumption culture programs, conducting joint promotions of sustainable seafood, and discovering other mutually cooperative areas. GS Retail expects to strengthen the sales of sustainable seafood and enhance customer trust in purchased products by expanding the promotion of environmentally friendly products to visiting customers through this agreement.
Since the 16th, GS Retail has been selling MSC-certified cleaned squid 500g and long-spined rockfish fillet 500g at GS THE FRESH, and from the 16th until the end of this month, an MSC-certified product special exhibition is being held on the online mall Dalli Salda. GS Retail plans to expand promotional events for MSC-certified products in the future.
