Peas, Oats, and Even Almonds!
If you are interested in a vegan diet or lactose intolerant, try plant-based beverages instead of milk. Made from soybeans as well as various grains and nuts, there are plenty of drinks that can replace milk while offering great taste and health benefits. Market Kurly also sells several plant-based beverages, and I tried three different drinks made from different ingredients and left honest comments.
Sproud
Vegan Pea Drink Plain
Sproud vegan pea drink from Sweden is exactly what its name suggests?a drink made from peas. You can choose from four types according to your preference: the original base, cocoa powder-flavored chocolate, barista with rich foam ideal for making lattes, and unsweetened without added sugar. After some consideration, I chose the original.
It has the color of soy milk and a similar aroma. Compared to packaged soy milk, the pea flavor is a bit stronger, and if you keep drinking it, a slight fishy taste emerges. It’s not unbearable, but if you are used to the nutty flavor of packaged soy milk, you might need some time to adjust. The texture is lighter than milk but heavier than oat drinks. Even though it’s the original flavor and not unsweetened, the sweetness is not strong and it tastes mild. I want to give it extra points because it doesn’t leave a heavy feeling in the mouth after drinking. It goes well with sweet and nutty muesli or granola.
Oatside
Chocolate-flavored Oat Milk
Oatside oat milk from Singapore is made using 100% Australian oats. The charming packaging and cute illustrations catch the eye. Between the original and chocolate flavors, I chose the chocolate flavor.
Found it, the chocolate milk substitute. Oatside chocolate-flavored oat milk retains the sweetness of chocolate milk while adding a spoonful of oat nuttiness. It’s not a vague mix of grains and chocolate but a chocolate milk with a properly mild cocoa taste. If Oatly’s chocolate-flavored drink is very smooth but a bit greasy, this drink is less greasy and has a cleaner taste. Both the packaging and taste are excellent, making it great for use as a home caf? ingredient.
137 degrees
Almond Drink
137degrees almond drink from Thailand. 137℃ refers to the optimal sterilization temperature to preserve the freshness of nuts. There are almond milks sweetened with coconut flower nectar and unsweetened almond milks emphasizing a nutty flavor without sweetness. I chose the almond milk with added sweetness.
This almond drink is sweeter and has a stronger almond flavor than Almond Breeze. It feels like drinking Almond Breeze concentrate. Despite the strong flavor, the texture is thin, so it’s not heavy to drink. The sweetness is stronger than expected, so if you want a mild and nutty taste, I recommend choosing the unsweetened version. It pairs very well when mixed with soybean powder or misutgaru (grain powder drink) for a nutty flavor or combined with strong brewed coffee as a latte.
