Park Yong-jin "Is Woo Sang-ho's Emergency Committee management-type? ... Judging by the members, it doesn't seem like it will just pass"
50% Reflection of Party Convention Public Opinion Must Be Met
Skeptical About Lee Jae-myung's Party Convention Candidacy... "Don't View Hastily Monetizing It Favorably"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Park Yong-jin, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, predicted on the 10th that the emergency committee to be launched after the local election defeat will be an innovative emergency committee, and stated that the system should be improved so that public opinion can be more reflected in the party convention. Regarding rumors of Lee Jae-myung, a Democratic Party member, running for the party convention, he expressed the view that caution is needed.
On the same day, Park said on KBS Radio’s ‘Choi Kyung-young’s Strongest Current Affairs’ about the newly launched Woo Sang-ho emergency committee, "Since the period is short, it is impossible to change all the various demands for party change," but added, "Judging by the members of the emergency committee, it does not seem like they will just let things pass."
He said, "The people recommended by first-term, second-term, and third-term lawmakers are Lee Yong-woo, Park Jae-ho, and Han Jeong-hye, and these people are not ones to remain idle."
Park further stated, "If the Democratic Party holds this party convention without innovation, it will be on the path to ruin," and added, "If it is just about electing predetermined people in a predetermined event on a predetermined date, which citizen would think the Democratic Party has changed?"
Regarding the direction of innovation, he said, "The completion of all innovation is institutional reform. Because public opinion is reflected 50:50, phenomena like Oh Se-hoon or Lee Jun-seok emerging happened, right?" He explained, "The Democratic Party convention rules are structured as 45% delegates, 40% party members with voting rights, 10% general public opinion polls, and 5% general party member surveys, which is a closed selection method," and said, "This should be changed to an open system."
He said, "The Democratic Party’s current approval rating is around 30%, but with this kind of opinion poll method that refuses to listen to the opinions of the remaining 70% of the public, how can you say you are listening to the people’s will?" He added, "Party members’ opinions should be 50 and public opinion 50. How to reflect the party members’ 50 can be further discussed."

Regarding Lee Jae-myung, who ran as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the last presidential election, running for party leader, he said, "It is his own decision," but added, "Deploying him immediately during the local elections and again at this party convention as a significant political asset, repeatedly like this, I see it as a short-term trading phenomenon that tries to hastily cash in on an important asset of the party, which I view negatively."
