Yeongsangang Regional Environmental Office Establishes Cooperation System for Responding to Summer Algal Bloom Occurrences
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office will hold a working-level meeting of the 'Water Quality Management Council,' which includes related organizations, on the 13th to prepare for the summer season when green algae blooms typically begin.
The Yeongsangang and Seomjingang Water Quality Management Council is a consultative body composed of nine organizations and experts, including the Korea Water Resources Corporation within the watershed, to share trends in algae outbreaks and discuss response measures within the water system.
At this meeting, opinions will be exchanged regarding the green algae response and cooperation system enhancement plans established by each organization.
In particular, key discussions will focus on the Korea Water Resources Corporation and Gwangju City's green algae response plans to ensure drinking water safety at the three major water source dams where the algae alert system is implemented, as well as strengthening cooperation among related organizations for green algae response at the Yeongsangang weirs and estuary.

Kim Seung-hee, head of the Yeongsangang Office, stated, “Given the prolonged drought and early heatwave raising concerns about the spread of green algae, we will closely cooperate with related organizations to minimize green algae damage and respond effectively to ensure the stable supply of drinking water.”
