LGD Establishes Dominance in Large OLED with Next-Generation TV Panel ‘OLED.EX’
Expanding into Gaming, Transparent, and Portable Areas with OLED.EX Technology Leading the Way
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] LG Display is achieving the mainstream adoption of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) in the premium TV market with its next-generation TV panel, ‘OLED.EX’.
OLED is a display where each of the tens of millions of pixels that make up the screen emits light by itself. It offers perfect black and rich color expression, which are difficult to achieve with existing LCDs, and has the fastest response speed among current TVs. It is an eye-friendly display that minimizes harmful blue light, and by not using a backlight and reducing the number of components, it also minimizes environmental impact.
LG Display’s cumulative sales of OLED TV panels have been growing rapidly, surpassing 1 million units in 2016, 5 million units in 2018, 10 million units in 2020, and recently exceeding 20 million units.
LG Display plans to solidify its leadership in large OLEDs this year with OLED.EX, while expanding into new OLED business areas such as gaming, transparent, and portable OLEDs by leveraging OLED.EX technology. OLED.EX applies ‘heavy hydrogen technology’ and ‘personalization algorithms’ to the organic light-emitting elements, which are the core of OLED image quality, enabling more precise color expression.
LG Display plans to apply OLED.EX to all OLED TV panels starting from the second quarter of this year. Also, based on OLED.EX technology, it is promoting gaming, transparent, and portable OLEDs as new business areas beyond TVs.
