Patent Office and Ministry of Science and ICT Collaborate to Foster Science Talent Based on Intellectual Property
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] On the 7th, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that it signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Invention Promotion Association, and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity to mutually cooperate in fostering future science and technology talents based on intellectual property.
In the agreement, KIPO and the Ministry of Science and ICT reached a consensus through a director-level policy council that it is necessary to create an environment where research achievements can be linked to economic outcomes in the era of technological hegemony, and that intellectual property is a key element in this process.
They also agreed to mutually cooperate in expanding intellectual property education and raising awareness for science prodigies who will lead the future science and technology era through proactive administration among related organizations.
The Korea Invention Promotion Association and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, which participated in the business agreement as major related organizations, also plan to cooperate in exchanging information to activate intellectual property activities of future science and technology talents and to nurture future science and technology talents and invention talents.
First, from the second half of this year, the two organizations will pilot a science prodigy creative research program based on intellectual property targeting science high schools and gifted schools.
In cooperation with Gyeongbuk Science High School, Changwon Science High School, and Incheon Science Arts Gifted School, 10 R&E (Research & Education - Science Prodigy Creative Research) projects conducted by students from each school will be selected, and support will be provided through intellectual property special lectures, consulting by patent attorneys related to research projects, and patent applications.
To raise awareness of intellectual property among science prodigies, online intellectual property education content will be made available so that any student at science high schools and gifted schools can receive intellectual property education, and the spread of intellectual property-R&E programs will be promoted by utilizing training for R&E teachers.
Additionally, by linking with events such as the year-end R&E performance presentation competition, excellent cases of intellectual property-R&E will be selected to help establish a comprehensive ecosystem.
Jung Yeon-woo, Director of the Industrial Policy Bureau at KIPO, said, “Through this agreement, we will spare no support so that more science prodigies can grow into creative talents in science and technology who recognize the importance of intellectual property.”

Hwang Pan-sik, Director of the Future Talent Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “We will support science prodigies to expand their perspectives into the field of intellectual property and acquire capabilities so that they can grow into leaders who will lead the global scientific and industrial communities in the era of technological hegemony.”
