Jeju Police Agency Conducts Special Crackdown on Two-Wheelers... 1,737 Violations Detected
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Go Gi-cheol) announced on the 3rd that from March 1 to the 31st of last month, they operated a ‘Special Crackdown Period on Disorderly Behavior of Two-Wheeled Vehicles,’ during which a total of 1,737 traffic violations were enforced.
The types of violations included 625 cases (35.9%) of not wearing helmets, the highest number, followed by 341 cases (19.6%) of signal violations, 92 cases (5.2%) of violation of safe driving duties, and 77 cases (4.6%) of crossing the center line. Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase of 685 cases (65.1%↑).
Jeju Police detected 73 cases of illegal modifications causing noise such as mufflers and fog lights (illegal tuning), and illegal attachment of LEDs; 14 cases of license plate obstruction (damage) or non-attachment; and 11 cases of non-use reporting violations, totaling 98 violations of the Automobile Management Act. These were reported to the administrative authorities for fines and other penalties.
In the past five years, more than 300 two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents have occurred annually, accounting for 8.8% of all traffic accidents.
In particular, in 2021, there were a total of 445 two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents, a 36.1% increase (+118 cases) compared to 327 cases the previous year.
Over the past five years, two-wheeled vehicles accounted for 15.8% (55 out of 348) of all fatalities, and this year, they accounted for 21.1% (4 out of 19).
As of last month, a total of 150 two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents occurred, a decrease of 29 cases (16.2%↓) compared to the same period last year, but the number of fatalities increased by 1 person (33.3%↑) to 4.
A Jeju Police official stated, “To minimize damage and inconvenience caused by two-wheeled vehicle noise, we plan to continuously conduct intensive crackdowns day and night in close cooperation with related organizations such as the Autonomous Police Corps, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and local governments.”
He added, “Before enforcement, we ask two-wheeled vehicle drivers to voluntarily comply with laws to eradicate chronic disorderly behavior and establish an advanced traffic culture that considers others.”
