"Semiconductor Supply Shortage Continues"... Hyundai Motor and Kia May Domestic and Overseas Sales Decrease (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Due to the ongoing global shortage of automotive semiconductors, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia saw a decrease in domestic and overseas sales in May compared to the same month last year.
Hyundai Motor announced on the 2nd that it sold a total of 324,039 vehicles worldwide in May 2022, including 63,373 units domestically and 260,666 units overseas. Compared to the same period last year, domestic sales increased by 2.1%, but overseas sales decreased by 1.1%.
In the domestic market last month, Hyundai sold 63,373 units, a 2.1% increase compared to the same month last year. By model, sedans sold a total of 16,544 units, including 7,602 units of the Grandeur, 3,990 units of the Sonata, and 4,918 units of the Avante.
Recreational vehicles (RVs) sold a total of 20,570 units, including 4,110 units of the Palisade, 2,477 units of the Santa Fe, 3,722 units of the Tucson, 3,054 units of the Ioniq 5, and 4,402 units of the Casper. Additionally, the Porter recorded 8,299 units, the Staria 2,914 units, and medium-to-large buses and trucks totaled 2,812 units.
Kia sold 234,554 units domestically and internationally last month, a 4.9% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Domestically, sales decreased by 4.7% to 45,663 units, and overseas sales dropped by 5% to 188,891 units. The shortage of automotive semiconductor parts caused production disruptions, leading to reduced sales.
The best-selling model by vehicle type was the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) Sportage, with 37,949 units sold domestically and internationally. The compact SUV Seltos followed with 20,813 units, and the mid-size SUV Sorento sold 17,738 units.
In the domestic market alone, the best-selling vehicle was the 1-ton small truck Bongo III, with 5,655 units sold. Passenger car models sold 14,651 units, and recreational vehicles (RVs) sold 25,208 units domestically. Commercial vehicles totaled 5,804 units sold.
Overseas, the Sportage sold 33,407 units, followed by the Seltos with 17,950 units, and the compact sedan Rio (Pride) with 14,001 units sold.
