Qualcomm's Intent to Jointly Acquire ARM Shares... Partnering or Competing with SK Hynix?
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] U.S. semiconductor company Qualcomm has expressed its intention to acquire shares in the British semiconductor company ARM. As ARM is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), Qualcomm stated that it will form a consortium with other companies to maintain neutrality in the fiercely competitive semiconductor market.
On the 30th (local time), Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, said in an interview, "Qualcomm is a party interested in investing in ARM shares," and added, "ARM is a very important asset and essential for the development of our semiconductor industry," according to Bloomberg citing the Financial Times (FT). CEO Amon also mentioned that if the consortium size for investing in ARM shares grows sufficiently large, there is a possibility of fully acquiring ARM by joining forces with other semiconductor chip manufacturers, which would allow ARM to remain independent.
Initially, SoftBank, a Japanese investment company and the largest shareholder of ARM, announced earlier this year that it would list ARM on the New York Stock Exchange after the failure of U.S. semiconductor company Nvidia's acquisition of ARM. However, concerns have grown from the UK government and others regarding ARM's technological importance as a semiconductor company. Qualcomm had originally opposed Nvidia's acquisition of ARM. Qualcomm stated that it has not discussed this share investment with SoftBank.

Attention is also focused on whether CEO Amon's announcement will influence SK Hynix's plans, which have also expressed consideration of acquiring ARM shares. In March, SK Hynix Vice Chairman Park Jung-ho responded to a question about whether they were reviewing an ARM acquisition by saying, "I don't think ARM is a company that can be acquired by a single company. We are considering acquiring it as a consortium with strategic investors." Accordingly, it is being watched whether SK Hynix and Qualcomm are discussing a joint acquisition of ARM shares or if they will become competitors in this regard.
