Korea Elected as Executive Director Country of UN ESCAP Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific... 6 Consecutive Times
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Son Seon-hee] Statistics Korea announced on the 30th that South Korea has been elected as an executive board member of the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP) for the sixth consecutive term.
At the 78th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) held in Bangkok, Thailand on the 27th, South Korea was elected as a board member, receiving the second highest number of votes among 16 countries, following China. The board member term is three years until 2025, and there are a total of nine countries including the ex officio member (Japan).
UNSIAP, established in 1970 and elevated to a subsidiary body of UNESCAP in 1995, is the region’s premier statistical education institution with the objectives of ▲providing practical training in official statistics to government officials in the region ▲enhancing capabilities in statistical collection, analysis, and dissemination ▲supporting the production of high-quality official statistics that can be utilized for national development.
Statistics Korea explained that South Korea’s election as a six-time board member was largely due to its financial contributions for national statistical education in the Asia-Pacific region, operation of educational programs targeting regional countries, and leadership roles as chair in international statistical communities such as the UN and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It added that international development cooperation activities (ODA), including projects to strengthen statistical capacity in developing countries such as Vietnam and Mongolia, were also recognized by the international community.
