[Cannes (France) = Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Director Koreeda Hirokazu received the Ecumenical Award on the afternoon of the 28th (local time) at the Salon de l'Ambassadeur in Cannes, France, for his film "Broker."
The Ecumenical Award is given to films that demonstrate outstanding artistic achievement with a profound reflection on human existence. The Ecumenical Foundation awards this prize to competition films invited to festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Montreal. Although it boasts a 48-year tradition since 1974 at Cannes, it is a ceremony held independently from the Cannes Film Festival.
The 75th Cannes Film Festival competition entry "Broker" depicts an unexpected special journey of people connected through a baby box. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, Bae Doona, and IU, among others.
Director Koreeda Hirokazu is a master who has been invited a total of eight times, including six times in the competition section, with films such as "Nobody Knows" (2004, competition), "Air Doll" (2009, Un Certain Regard), "Like Father, Like Son" (2013, competition, Jury Prize), "Our Little Sister" (2015, competition), "After the Storm" (2016, Un Certain Regard), and "Shoplifters" (2018, competition, Palme d'Or).
Meanwhile, the Cannes Film Festival closing ceremony will be held at 8:30 PM that day at the Lumi?re Theater.
